About the Author
Mary Jo Bowie is an instructor in the Health Information Technology Program at Broome Community College, where she has taught medical coding, quality assurance, and computers in health care for 15 years. A registered Health Information Administrator and accredited Health Information Technician, she also owns Health Information Professional Services, a medical record consulting firm. Ms. Bowie is a popular conference speaker, and has written multiple books on coding and health information management, including UNDERSTANDING ICD-9-CM, UNDERSTANDING PROCEDURAL CODING, UNDERSTANDING ICD-10-CM/PCS, and ESSENTIALS OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT, all from Cengage Learning. An active member of the American Health Information Management Association, Ms. Bowie has served on the Board of Directors for New York, where she was education director and a member of the Ambulatory Coding Guideline Committee.Gail I. Smith is an associate professor and director of the Health Information Management Program at the University of Cincinnati. She has been a Health Information Management professional and educator for more than three decades, has served as a coding consultant for several years, and has written or co-authored several successful coding textbooks. Ms. Bowie is an active member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and previously served as a member of the organization’s Board of Directors. She received her bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University and her master’s degree in education from The College of Mt. St. Joseph.
