Healthcare privatization in Spain has been developing progressively since the late 1980s. Finding coverage in the supposed rationalization of spending, private capital then began to make its way, slowly and silently, into the public health system. However, it is from the year 1996, after the arrival of José María Aznar to the Government of the nation, when an authentic privatization crusade begins in Spain based on the search for the so-called efficiency of the system. Catalonia, Valencia and Madrid have become exponents of the outsourcing of health services and the privatization of hospital management that have advanced by leaps and bounds in the last decade. The process has been tremendously complex and has been plagued with irregularities, which has resulted in a trail of high-ranking officials charged and, above all, in a strong social and professional opposition unified in an unprecedented protest movement: the white tide. But who has benefited from the healthcare privatization in Spain? The list is long: governments that have been able to open hospitals without incurring deficits and at the same time outsource budget cuts by passing them on to companies free to be accountable to their constituents; former politicians who have profited from their previous experience as public managers from the private sector; American and British companies that have been made through the purchase of a good part of the privatized national assets; venture capital funds with expectations of large short-term returns; consultants, law firms ?? How much have they earned and how much can they expect to earn in the future? Those who have benefited from healthcare privatization (and aspire to continue doing so) have first and last names.
